As PC gamers around the world can attest, the excitement of being the first to get you hands on the latest and most advanced PC game is easily dampened by the cumbersome and lengthy process of learning how best to play the game.

For Oren Kramer, a flight attendant and an avid gamer, the proverbial light came on while learning to master the basic commands of StarCraft, an intense real-time strategy game. Oren wanted to start strategizing immediately, but couldn't do it without knowing the commands required to play. Even in the middle of play, he'd be to referring back to the manual figuring out how to switch commands or determine which moves would optimize his performance.

So he asked himself, what if there was a simpler way for new users to get into the game? What if gamers could focus more on strategy instead of memorizing key commands? What if a keyboard could allow gamers to execute complex maneuvers requiring a combination of movements with just a single keystroke? From these simple thoughts emerged the promise of the Zboard, a revolutionary interchangeable keyboard for gaming.

Like the n50, the n52 is aimed at fans of First Person Shooters. The blurb on the box promises that it will "Frag intuitively, for lightning quick-strikes." The controller maker's goal was to largely eliminate the need to search over the keyboard to find crucial keys in time-critical situations. All the required keys, wheels and pads fit right into the palm of your hand.

Due for release in May 2006 and coming from the Surrey-based Philips amBX Group, amBX is a step towards a full 'sensory surround experience' and enabled games will provide gamers with the ability to use light, colour, sound, heat and even airflow in the real world during gameplay.

Imagine the room of the future, where all electronic devices are amBX-enabled. The treacherous road to Saigon will turn your room jungle green, swimming with dolphins will splash it deep blue, 'Halo' jumps will turn your fans on full, lightning storms will strobe your white lighting, and attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion will blast on your heaters.

Incorporating a scripting language, software engine and architecture, amBX has been designed to deliver all-new player experiences through enabled devices such as LED colour-controlled lights, active furniture, fans, heaters, audio and video, which are all placed in the user's room. amBX goes even further to provide the support framework for peripheral manufacturers to develop these enabled products, empowering both developers and publishers to amBX-enable and enhance their games. In the future, game players may even be able to author and share their own personal amBX experiences online.

Taking these sensory additions to the extreme are the Germany-based artists //////////FUR////, who create augmented hardware devices for gaming and attempt to alter the player’s experiences with the added variables of pain and physical, first-person perspectives.
